What it checks

Every rule is fixed and published.

  1. 01

    The file is served

GET /llms.txt must return a 2xx response. A 404, or your app's HTML page for unknown URLs, counts as missing.

  2. 02

Plain text, not a web page

The file should be text/plain or text/markdown. A 200 that returns HTML gives tools nothing to read.

  3. 03

    H1 title

The first line must be a single # heading with your site or project name. It is the only required part of the format.

  4. 04

    Summary

A short > blockquote under the title tells a model what the site is before it reads further.

  5. 05

    Link sections

    ## headings followed by lists of - [name](url): note links, in the llmstxt.org layout.

  6. 06

    Linked pages load

The first 5 links are requested. Links that return an error send tools to dead pages.

Questions

Does llms.txt help my Google ranking?
No. Google's guidance says it doesn't affect Search visibility. This checker tells you whether the file is well formed for the AI tools and agents that choose to read it, nothing more.
What is llms.txt?
A markdown file at the root of your site, proposed at llmstxt.org, that lists your most useful pages for language models in a form that is easy to parse.
Where should the file live?

Do you store the URL I check?
No. We keep your IP address and the time of each check for up to an hour, to enforce a limit of 10 checks an hour. The URL isn't stored.
